In Pursuit of Less (2020)

Jose Solon Perfecto’s process is in being the maker. He harvests, blends, and ages his clays in a sequence that gives it life.

“These clay bodies have souls now,” says the artist, “but every now and then, one will try to defy me.”

In this intimate creative dynamic with his medium, the artist is able to execute his expressions of art and emotion, with a mutual understanding of their intertwined purpose in this world.

In this body of work, Jose honors the practice of making an offering. Despite being a modernist, the urge to go deeper into his family’s culture and traditions have inevitably led him to pre-colonial archetypes. He came to discover how such beliefs and superstitions rang true for him as these stoneware pieces, at first his selfish creations, became his offerings to the gods that govern the seas, lands, and the fire in his kiln.
