A Solo Exhibition by Jose Solon Perfecto
-
Solon Perfecto hopes to articulate through his pieces the millennia-old stories that clay has to share. “The language clay speaks is ancient, and the stories it tells are in the memories of the forms the artist makes,” he says. With works ranging from traditional pottery to contemporary sculptures, Solon Perfecto asserts that the universality of the three-dimensional form needs no words but must be experienced through the senses.

Perfecto’s sculptures have tall, pointy hats, volatile glazed movements on the body, and slip brushstrokes that portray the nature and rural surroundings of his studio. Known for creating Terroir Ceramics, the stoneware blend of his sculptures features aged and fermented wild clay that Perfecto sourced around the foothills, river beds, and rice fields in La Union.

Jose Solon Perfecto, Artist Statement (2024):
“I liken the [concept of a] deli to the hermitage of a wizard, whom knights seek out before their quests, to bring good fortune, to find clarity, and to get closer to truth with magical items that light the way on roads riddled with darkness and mischief.
“Using my artist persona of the Hermit, I forged these objects with the blessings of the spirits from which the wild clays and ashes come from – to make amulets and talismans that, like wines and cigars, can offer a different sensory experience and taste each time you partake.”
Perfecto Deli: A Deli For The Senses (2024)

20 November to 17 December 2024
Step into Perfecto Deli: A Deli For The Senses — a display of a hermit-artist’s inner sanctum through abstract expressionist ceramic sculptures.
In this solo exhibition, Jose Solon Perfecto furthers his myth-making approach to pottery with forms that stand in for oral traditions — recipes, superstitions, culture — to sate not merely appetites, but tastes.
